04|14|09   US Tour: WNUR 89.3FM – Evanston, Chicago, IL (April 8th, Day 6)

Playing live-to-air on WNUR’s airplay show was such a privilege for me, as it’s my alma mater’s own college radio station. During my years at WNUR I was always a tad mad at myself for not getting more involved with the station, but it seemed like a very elitist and mysterious club to me, and, at the time, and I might have just lacked the confidence to approach the people there. Odd really, since I knew numerous people who DJ’d there, such as my friend Nick, and one of my favorite room mates ever, Matthew Teti (what ever happened to you man!?).

01|31|09   Recording the new album

Horn and trombone arrangement for a new song, called Night Sky TexturesHorn and trombone arrangement for a new song, called “Night Sky Textures”. Download the high-res PDF score.

All apologies for having neglected my blogging duties over the last month or two. I only have ten days left in New Zealand before I head over to the States. The US tour is shaping up nicely – though, admittedly, I have been a bit slow to book in the final 5-6 dates (I’m aiming for a total of roughly 20 shows). My main focus, aside from some wonderful developments in my personal life, has been to finish the recording of the new album.

Although I won’t get it all done in time, I’m still incredibly pleased with the progress we’ve made over the last two months. Pretty much all of the instrumental parts to the twelve songs are now tracked, and what is left to do now is record vocals, mix the album, and get it mastered in the States. Even lyric writing, which traditionally takes me the longest, has been going far better than I had anticipated, with the majority of lyrics being near completion.

08|08|08   Kimo – Surrender

My friend Rob is pretty much my hero. He works really hard, writes and produces fantastic music, has run one of New Zealand’s longest running labels (Failsafe Records), is much more himself than I am myself, is in a wonderful relationship, runs his own recording studio, doesn’t drink, doesn’t take drugs, and is more passionate about great music than almost anyone I know. In short, Rob is one of my very best friends, and I’m really proud of that fact.

06|08|08   Cat and Bird Split 7″

The Cat and Bird 7″ is a very limited edition split between us and the late Break Mission Kills. This collaboration, however, is more of a marriage than a split, with each of our band’s derelict post-pop aesthetic supporting the other’s. The entire run is limited to 100 copies, though the record (and bonus tracks) can be downloaded for free at www.catandbird.info.

12|26|07   A day out in the woods

Walking in our woods in Indiana

I spent a wonderful day out in our woods and fields yesterday. It’s extremely cold right now, but heartening. The sun is out almost every morning, and I feel very much at home in the vast expanse of the American mid-west.

It feels like a lifetime has gone by since I recorded this little idea:

12|21|07   Lowell, Indiana: A note from home

A view from our veranda. There is snow everywhere, and the sun is refracting through the thin red petals of a flower. It is beautiful.

It’s true, I never thought the time would come, but I am now of an age where I belong to “those of a certain generation”. I guess I always thought that life would just make an exception for me, moving just a bit more slowly maybe, a bit more gently, protecting me, rather lovingly, a bit more kindly. Life, instead, has moved too quickly for my taste – and with more indifference, I might add. The many years have congealed into a single web, thin, and barely wide enough to cover my tracks.

I am so grateful to be home. I am so grateful to be home. So grateful…

MP3 Download: Theme and Variation 1 (192kb @ 2.5mb)
A tender interlude based on the song “We Might As Well Have Stayed Young”.
