08|08|08   Kimo – Surrender

My friend Rob is pretty much my hero. He works really hard, writes and produces fantastic music, has run one of New Zealand’s longest running labels (Failsafe Records), is much more himself than I am myself, is in a wonderful relationship, runs his own recording studio, doesn’t drink, doesn’t take drugs, and is more passionate about great music than almost anyone I know. In short, Rob is one of my very best friends, and I’m really proud of that fact.

Pretty much for as long as I’ve known Rob, he has been obsessing over his latest Kimo album, called “Surrender”. For me, Kimo really pulls the best and most evocative elements of the late 80’s post-punk movement through a wormhole (made possible though relativistic time dilation, of course) right into the lush landscape of dark and deep 21st pop.

Needless to say, when Rob asked me whether I could come down to his studio with my guitar and lay down a few lines on a song or two, I obviously said yes. We recorded numerous quasi-improvised takes over a few songs, and I even got roped into singing a few lines here and there (most of which – thank goodness – did not make it onto the record! haha).

Anyhow, Rob and I were taking one of our many walks through the city the other night, and I asked him how he would feel about me letting all of you download one of the Kimo tracks I played on. And so, with Rob’s blessing, I decided to share with you a track called “Marzipan”. There are so many guitars on this song, it’s almost impossible for me to explain what guitar parts I did and didn’t play. However, I suppose that’s really beside the point anyhow, as it’s simply a gorgeous piece of music, and I’m just incredibly proud to have had a small part in its recording.

I’ll give you one hint though: if you’ve listened to songs of mine like “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” or “Do Re Mi”, you will probably recognize the sound of the high guitar line starting around 1 minute and 12 seconds.

*cough* coke bottle cap *cough* me, me, me! :) *cough*

If you end up falling in love with this song, and you would like to explore this album in all its glory, please consider buying the record directly from Failsafe Records.

Yay! Check out the new Enright House Shop I just finished making! Even if you’re not the type of person who buys music anymore, do take a look at how pretty and shiny it is! :)

Thanks for the kind words Mark. much appreciated.
your guitar is the opening pattern which I ripped from later in the song and put effects on, the bottletop shimmer guitar is yours and then you start proper at 3.05. that’s you there all the way to the end, along with a bunch of other parts, plus some of the second parts are you too, the cascading guitar line, the end one is mine I think.
some other goodies for listening and downloading at the myspace too of course.

Haha. You must have magic protools fingers then, because I honestly can’t remember playing all those pretty lines so well! :)
